Statement of the Minister of European Integration, Mr. Bekim Çollaku, following the adoption of European Parliament Resolution on Kosovo

March 12, 2015

12 March 2015 – Yesterday, in Strasbourg, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on European integration process of Kosovo. This resolution also demonstrates that the European Parliament remains one of the most supporting institutions to the Republic of Kosovo and its European integration process.

I welcome the fact that this resolution calls on five EU member states to recognize the independence of Kosovo. The resolution gives strong support to the European perspective of the country, appealing on a soon signing of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, whereby it will strengthen the political dialogue between EU and Kosovo, integrate trade and provide new ways of cooperation. The European Parliament requires from the Council to take a decision on signing the SAA as soon as possible and certainly in the first half of this year. Kosovo’s progress in meeting visa liberalization roadmap requirements it is confirmed, appealing on undertaking any actions in order to accelerate this process, for our institutions are largely committed.

It is very welcomed the fact that the European Parliament affirmatively requires the strengthening of the international subjectivity of Kosovo, through involvement in European and international organizations, provision of international telephone code, and providing conditions for the participation of our athletes and artists in international competitions in behalf of the Republic of Kosovo. This resolution welcomes Kosovo’s role in the coalition for fighting terrorism and related actions on prohibition of joining armed conflicts outside the state territory, whereby in this regard Kosovo undertaken firm steps. While, this Resolution requires from Serbia to play a constructive role in dissolving its parallel structures and to allow more involvement of Serbian community in Kosovo’s institutional framework.
We welcome recommendations of this resolution related to the continuation and deepening of reforms in rule of law, justice, public administration and Kosovo`s commitment in fighting organized crime and corruption. Institutions of the Republic of Kosovo will review these recommendations and will be fully committed to address them in the framework of EU integration process.

Therefore, I would like to express my gratitude Ms. Ulrike Lunacek, European Parliament Rapporteur on Kosovo, for the role she played upon drafting of this resolution, as well as for her colleagues in the European Parliament who continue supporting Kosovo.
