Prishtina, 7 March 2017 – Minister of European Integration, Mimoza Ahmetaj, hosted today in a bilateral meeting the Director of European Commission for Western Balkans, Mrs. Genoveva Ruiz Calavera, which handed over to Minister Ahmetaj the first part of the Financial Agreement of the Instrument of Pre-Accession (IPA) 2016, in the amount of 45.5 million Euros, from the overall contribution of EU for Kosovo in the amount of 70.5 million Euros.
The second part of the agreement is being negotiated to be in the form of direct budgetary support in the field of Public Administration Reform, with the previous amount of 25 million Euros.
During the meeting it was discussed about the visa liberalization process, where Minister Ahmetaj and Director Ruiz Calavera confirmed the progress achieved in the fight against corruption and building capacities for establishing law and order. It was highlighted the importance of the approval of demarcation with Montenegro as soon as possible. With regards to the SAA implementation, it was confirmed that in the first year of the SAA implementation, Kosovo is taking measures in due time to ensure the satisfactory implementation of SAA in compliance with the provisions of SAA and at the same time it was highlighted the importance of the awareness-raising campaign for SAA launched by MEI.
Delegation discussed also about the preparations of Kosovo for the membership of Kosovo in EU Programs, as well as the progress in rehabilitation of the railway line X.
Minister Ahmetaj thanked Mrs. Ruiz Calavera for the visit and cooperation and also stated that:”Financial Agreement IPA 2016 will help in fulfilling obligations foreseen within SAA in the field of competition and business support, education and employment, as well as human rights. We believe that this financial package will play a critical role in supporting reforms foreseen in SAA.”
European Union helped Kosovo with an amount of more than 600 million Euros for the period 2007-2013, as part the Instrument of Pre-Accession. For the period 2014-2020, the financial assistance of IPA amounts to 645 million Euros. All these funds help in carrying out reforms aimed to help Kosovo to fulfill its obligations within the European integration process.
