March 24, 2017

Prishtina, 24 March 2017 – Minister of European Integration, Ms. Mimoza Ahmetaj met today with a delegation from Austria, headed by the Ambassador of Austria to Kosovo, Mr. Gernot Pfandler, accompanied by; Director General for Europe at the Austrian Ministry for Europe, Alexander Schallenberg, officials responsible for the Western Balkans in the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Werner Almhofer, Mr. Thomas Mühlmann, and Austrian ambassadors deployed to the region and to the Brussels.

Upon this meeting, Minister Ahmetaj informed the present on the current processes that Kosovo is going through, namely advancement in European agenda and reforms being undertaken as part of the European agenda.

Ministers Ahmetaj put special emphasis on the importance that the European integration process has for Kosovo’s state-building, since the acceleration of this process is a requirement and commitment of the citizens of Kosovo.

In addition, Minister Ahmetaj stressed the proactive approach of the Republic of Kosovo with regards to the regional cooperation and advancement in the European agenda. She raised the concern on the recent developments that Serbia enacted through incidents such as the construction of the separation wall in Mitrovica, actions such as the arrest warrants against former fighters of KLA and now the case with former Prime Minister Haradinaj, who is being detained unjustly, have led to the adoption of a Resolution in the Kosovo Assembly that requires discontinuation of talks with Serbia considering that its behaviour contradicts the spirit of dialogue and improvement of relations.

On their part, the Ambassadors stressed the importance, for Austria, of the advancement of Kosovo and the entire region, especially the commitment to advance in the European agenda as a prerequisite to ensure peace and stability. In addition, from Berlin Process, they expect regional relations shall focus on economic development and improving the welfare of citizens since the economic development is a promoter in advancing further into European integration.
