Minister Ahmetaj meets with Ambassadors of EU member states

Prishtina, 22 February 2017 – Minister of European Integration, Ms. Mimoza Ahmetaj met today with ambassadors EU Member States in Kosovo.

During this meeting, they discussed key priorities, namely the progress made on the implementation of the Stabilization and Association Agreement and the European Reform Agenda, known as “ERA”, as well as finalization of issues within the Visa liberalization process and EU programs.

Recent developments and Kosovo’s progress with the majority of votes in the European Reform Agenda were discussed in more details. This foresees 22 priorities that must be met during 2017 with a focus on: Good Governance and Rule of Law, Competition and Education.

On this occasion, Minister Ahmetaj informed those present that the Ministry of European Integration in coordination with the EU Office shall make sure that EU funds directly support the implementation of ERA. Also, the Minister stated: “Almost a year after the entry into force of the SAA, we have deemed necessary the launching of an information campaign on the importance of the SAA to bring the SAA closer to ordinary citizens. Whereas, it is predicted that in future days, the Government will approve the National Plan for Implementation of the SAA”.

With regard to the Visa liberalization process, the EU Office and the Ambassadors present at the meeting emphasized the importance of combating corruption, and discussed the reforms being undertaken in justice. Whereas, Minister Ahmetaj stated: “We are in the process of building the capacities of the Special Prosecution by increasing the number of prosecutor”.

Whereas, in terms of access to EU programs, Kosovo and EU have signed the Framework Agreement for access to EU programs in November, and now the Ministry of European Integration is organizing public debates with relevant institutions, civil society, business community, and academia to decide the programs in which Kosovo should partake.

On the other hand, ambassadors of EU Member States, highly appreciated MIE’s commitment to pushing forward the European Agenda and that of Kosovo institutions, hence confirming their respective countries’ support in this regard.
