Acting ministers Reka and Vitia discussed the EU’s contribution during the pandemic

April 22, 2020

Prishtina, April 22, 2020 – The acting Minister of European Integration, Mr. Blerim Reka, received at the meeting the acting Minister of Health, Mr. Arben Vitia, with whom they discussed the joint work and interactions of the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo in treating and preventing the further spread of the corona virus COVID-19, as well as addressing the fulfillment of various requirements arising from this pandemic.

At this meeting, Minister Reka informed Minister Vitia about the commitment of the European Commission to release from restriction the export of medical equipment from the European Union to the Western Balkans, which shall be done through the exchange of experiences in the supply of necessary medical equipment as part of a common European response to the fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

In this regard, as he announced, the European Commission has held consultations with EU member states about a regulation that would regulate the export authorization scheme established on March 15 as an emergency measure ending on April 25, 2020. The proposal on the new regulation provides for the exclusion of the Western Balkans from the scheme. This regulation is expected to enter into force on April 26, 2020, which includes the exclusion of the Western Balkans from restrictions on exports of medical supplies coming from the EU, given that these countries are engaged in a deep integration process in the European Union.

In addition, Minister Vitia was informed about the further possibilities of cooperation and coordination of Kosovo’s requests and coordination with the EU Member States for the exchange of experiences and assistance of various natures in the successful management and overcoming of this pandemic.

For his part, Minister Vitia expressed his gratitude for the mutual cooperation in our common challenge in preventing this pandemic, as well as the unstinting contribution of all local institutions, EU member states, as well as the institutions of the European Union, who are among the main supporters of the Republic of Kosovo in these difficult days in the prevention and treatment of Coronavirus COVID-19.
