The Council of the European Union approves the Stabilisation and Association Agreement

October 22, 2015

Today, the Council of the European Union approved the Stabilisation and Association Agreement between Kosovo and the European Union. Approval of the SAA by the Council of the EU marks the completion of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement and opens the way for the signing of the SAA on 27 October in Strasbourg.

The SAA foresees the establishment of contractual relations between Kosovo and the European Union and represents the first formal step towards full membership in EU.

On the approval of the SAA, Minister Çollaku stated that “Today’s approval of the SAA by the Council of the EU is a historic moment for Kosovo, and opens a new page towards the ultimate goal of Kosovo’s membership in the EU. All institutions have worked hard to reach this day. Negotiation process of SAA started in 2013 and I would like to thank all the state institutions for their work during the negotiation of SAA, as well as our international partners for the provided support”.

SAA consists of 597 pages, divided in X titles, VII annexes and 5 protocols.

Ministry for European Integration made all the legal preparations for signing the SAA and the further process for ratification in the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo.
