Prishtina 4 May 2019 – Deputy Minister of the Ministry of European Integration, Lirak Çelaj, during his official visit to Sweden, was hosted by the Coordination Secretariat for European Union at the Office of the Prime Minister of Sweden, Mr. Jan Olsson, with whom he discussed the integration process, with a focus in visa liberalisation.
Mr. Çelaj pointed out the commitment of central and local institutions toward the implementation of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, European Reform Agenda and the expectation of citizens following the fulfilment of all liberalisation criteria under the Roadmap.
“Sweden has supported Kosovo in all processes and challenges, even before the war, by hosting numerous of our countryman, during and after the war, namely in the building of our state. Sweden now supports Kosovo through humanitarian organisations and direct funds, strengthening Kosovo’s institutions, democratization and human rights, for what we are profoundly grateful”, stated Mr. Çelaj, adding that such support must continue during the meeting of the Council of Ministers and Kosovo’s upcoming candidature for the candidate status of EU membership.
Mr. Olsson reaffirmed Sweden’s support to Kosovo in the light of current processes and challenges, not only focusing in visa liberalisation, but also in strengthening democratic institutions, rule of law and other important sectors to Kosovo’s institutions.
Mr. Çelaj, also had a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whereby he was hosted by Ms. Anna-Karin Eneström, Director on Policy Issues, and the Ministry of Justice, where he was hosted by Anna-Carin Svensson, Director General on International Issues.
Kosovo needs support in highly-important process to citizens such as visa liberalisation, integration in international organisation, implementation of the SAA and other reforms aligning Kosovo to EU, stated Mr. Çelaj, adding that with the Sweden’s friendship and support, Kosovo can solve these problems more easily.
Also, he emphasised that EU’s insufficient engagement in Kosovo, and in the region in general, runs the risk of allowing Western Balkan turn into a region where influences by other countries would prevail, and that would not be good to the region and to EU itself.
The delegation of Mr. ÇElaj was composed by Kushtrim Cukaj, Secretary General of the Ministry of European Integration, Agron Hoti, Political Advisor, and the representatives of the Embassy of Kosovo in Sweden, Mr. Sedat Burrniku and Valon Xhaferi.
