Today, Chief Negotiator Zulfaj received the European Parliament’s Rapporteur for Kosovo, Mr. Riho Terras, whom he thanked for his full and continuous support for Kosovo’s accession to the European Union.
During the meeting, they discussed the European Parliament’s Resolution on Kosovo, adopted on 17 June 2026 by a broad majority, which recognizes EU membership as Kosovo’s clear strategic and geopolitical choice and commends its commitment to European reforms, the rule of law, fundamental rights and freedoms, the fight against corruption, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
Through this resolution, the European Parliament, as the representative voice of EU citizens, reiterates its support for Kosovo’s application for membership in the European Union and calls on the Council of the European Union and the European Commission to take the necessary steps to assess the application and advance Kosovo towards candidate country status.
Chief Negotiator Zulfaj emphasized that candidate country status is Kosovo’s legitimate aspiration and that this step should naturally lead to the next phase: the opening of accession negotiations as a merit-based process, for which Kosovo is already undertaking the necessary preparations.
The resolution also supports Kosovo’s application for membership in the Council of Europe, endorses its strategic orientation towards joining NATO’s Partnership for Peace programme, calls for full accountability for the terrorist attack in Banjska, and urges the five European Union Member States that have not yet recognized Kosovo’s independence to do so.
Kosovo remains committed to the values and standards of the European Union, to advancing European reforms, and to addressing the areas in which the resolution identifies a need for further progress.
